This muscle bound city has turned to flab.
Homes designed by Kahn and Kamper crumble upon themselves like cardboard models.
People shuffle along dirty, cracked streets.
Hearts made mean by poverty, 90 proof, and China White.
Children shot dead at home and at school.
Keep ignoring this city.
It can never happen to your city.

Damn, girl.
Wow! Those 55 little words really tell an entire story! Great job this week my dear! Really makes ya think...of the lives that crumble with the buildings.
I was looking on Realtor.com a few weeks ago and saw bank owned homes for $1. It was absolutely amazing. And very sad.
I love the house. It needs bats in its belfry.
What a picture!
What a 55!
In this case, ugly realism - wake up people!
Prayer Girl
sadly it looks and sounds like places right here in Chicago...
oh and Impressive 55 Lou! Have a wonderful 4th of July!
Powerful imagery in words that stays with you. (Hugs)Indigo
Ooh, one of my favorite posts yet. And you know my heart has always been in this very city...
great post, love this 55.
'The muscle turns to flab' ! Indeed ! What an analogy.
And like fitness, one just doesnt know when the flab came on. And just stayed put forever.
I hope the world will wake up pretty soon.
It just keeps getting gloomier every week doesn't it?
Excellent 55 Lou!!
I hope this ain't your 'Hood'..:P
Thanks for playing, thanks for visiting, and have a GREAT Holiday... G
ouch! this can happen anywhere.
Shoot...we all know when and where the flab started and we all know what was and what is.
Good one Lou, nothing like shooting straight from the hip. truth can only help, if not Detroit then places that are on the edge of the same abyss.
This is what the theme of my next book of pros/verse is about. Soon enough it will be done.
Great 55 Lou, I feel your pain when I look here sometimes too. The old abandoned factories with the abandoned neighborhoods next to them. I saw a documentary recently on the once magnificent, now dilapidated architecture in Detroit. Becoming very commonplace around the entire country.
Dark and as you say....'it can never happen to your city'...but it does. To us all. Just look around.
Mine's posted.
Oh honey, I grew up in Youngstown, Ohio... I know what can happen to a city. Sorry it is happening to yours.
Sadly it is happening to too many cities. Nicely said.
Wow, a very powerful 55. Nicely done.
Powerful, indeed. Could be my hometown, only bigger.
Your 55's are always genius! I love it. It is so sad though. So very, very sad.
I can only hope it doesn't happen to my city.
We dragons feel bad for you humans and your silly cities. People were meant to live free not in old boxes. No wonder they go crazy.
Great 55
All too true in too many places. Bet it would make the Founding Fathers collectively spin in their grave.
However, life is made up of different shades of color...thanks for reminding us. Have a great weekend!
In Neenah they just tore down an entire block of those.
Very pointed poetry
Your words pack a punch this week Lou, a very good read! :)
my 55
Excellent Lou!
Very honest and true. The problem to me is that the people who have the power to implement change live in the ivory towers instead of the crumbling homes. Do you really think the monopoly men of our great country give a flying fig about the homeless wino sleeping on a park bench, because he can't get the mental health help he needs? The biggest irony of all Lou is that in a recession the underground economy will always thrive. People seek out something to escape the pain of their poverty. It's a nasty cycle and no one really cares enough to make the changes that are truly needed. Why pay your mortgage when they are going to take your damn house in a month or so anyhow. Go get a bottle or a bag of dope and forget about it for a day. That is the mentality that has to change. Great writing.
This one is awesome, Lou. Disturbing.
This was amazingly written.. and so true.
What a sad thing to have this house go down in shame. It could tell a lot of tales. Houses have souls too.
Lou,
This is a great one.
Love,
SB
